Route 55 single lane closures required in both directions over the next several weeks in Gloucester County
Route 42 southbound lane closures at Route 55 southbound, as needed
(Trenton) – Route 55 is expected to have overnight lane closures in both directions over the next several weeks between Whig Lane/CR 619 in Elk Township to Route 42 in Deptford, Gloucester County. In addition, right lane closures on Route 42 southbound will be required when work is taking place at the Route 55/Route 42 interchange.
Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, May 13, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, and continuing nightly Monday through Friday at the same times for the next several weeks, single lane closures on Route 55 northbound and southbound are scheduled in various locations from Whig Lane/CR 619 to Route 42. The lane closures are necessary for paving and rumble strip removal. At least one lane will be maintained during construction. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays while driving through the work zone.
In addition, from 9 p.m. tonight, Monday, May 13, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, and as needed Monday through Friday nights at the same time for the next several weeks, the two right lanes on Route 42 southbound will be closed at Exit 13 to assist with the pavement preservation work and improve safety for the work zone on Route 55 southbound. Access to Exit 13 will be maintained. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays.
NJDOT does not allow lane closures Friday through Sunday on major shore routes during the summer season, Memorial Day through Labor Day, unless emergency work is required. Construction on Route 55 in both directions will be restricted to Monday through Thursday nights during this time.
This work is part of an $8.2 million federally funded project that will preserve approximately 12 miles of pavement on Route 55 between Whig Lane/CR 619 in Elk Township to Route 42 in Deptford, Gloucester County. This project includes paving most ramps within the project limits, replacing the existing Weigh In Motion system on Route 55 southbound at mile post 57.8, and replacing some drainage inlets and curbs. This project is expected to be completed in summer 2024.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on X (Twitter) @NewJerseyDOT and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
